Roger Duguay attacks Liberals, PCs for stalling pay equity progress for five years.

New Brunswick's New Democratic Party is demanding pay equity legislation covering the private sector, Leader Roger Duguay announced on Monday.

Duguay used a campaign stop in Bathurst on Labour Day to criticize the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives for stalling progress on private sector pay equity in the last five years.

Duguay said his party supports a pay equity act that would require businesses with more than 10 employees to put in place a pay equity plan within four years.

The NDP has raised an alarming issue during this election campaign, one that it claims is costing taxpayers an extra $210 million a year.

Every March, government departments and agencies across New Brunswick participate in a spending orgy that would turn taxpayers' stomachs if they ever got a good glimpse.

Much of the spending is hard to account for because it occurs within the normal budget envelope of the respective department or agencies.

SAINT JOHN, NB - New Brunswick NDP leader Roger Duguay says his party will be ready for the September 27th vote.

He says almost 20 NDP candidates have been nominated and the party will have a candidate in every riding.

Things will be full steam ahead once the writ is dropped.

"Each week of the campaign we will release a part of our platform," he says.

He says the most important election issue is the economy and controlling the province's debt.

The NDP is campaigning on the economy for one reason: without a strong economy nothing else matters. Unless a party has a sensible economic vision, nothing else they say can be taken seriously.

Progressive Conservative finance critic Bruce Fitch says David Alward will be a good fiscal manager, based on the Bernard Lord government's record. And yes, despite money-wasting disasters such as Orimulsion, Mr. Lord balanced the books and reduced the debt. The NDP will give credit where it's due.

But Mr. Alward's Conservatives are nothing like the Lord government.

Roger Duguay is knocking on doors in his hometown of Tracadie-Sheila with a message: The New Democratic Party of New Brunswick will rein in the runaway spending of successive Liberal and Progressive Conservative governments.

It's an attempt to shake off the NDP's long-held reputation as a party bent on big spending and big government.

While the provincial NDP has never been able to earn or dispel that reputation, the NDP leader is working to convince voters his party is a fiscally responsible alternative
