Earlier today the news broke of the passing of former Nova Scotia NDP Leader, Alexa McDonough.

NB NDP Leader Mackenzie Thomason issued a statement on McDonough’s passing, stating:

“Alexa McDonough has and continues to be a great inspiration; her legacy as a trailblazer in progressive politics has earned her a special place in the hearts of Canadians. I wish to extend, on behalf of the NB NDP and myself, our sincerest condolences to our NDP cousins in Nova Scotia, to Alexa’s family, and those closest to her. We have lost a uniquely powerful voice today, which will not soon be forgotten.”

Alexa McDonough became the face of a new political era in Canada, one which transformative figures like Alexa paved the way for other women to enter Canadian Politics. She became the first female leader of a major Canadian political party in 1980 when she became leader of the Nova Scotia NDP. She quickly became a beloved figure, known for her compassion and her dedication to social justice. She served as leader of the Nova Scotia NDP until stepping down from leadership in 1994.

The following year, Alexa became leader of the Federal NDP until stepping down in 2003. Her contributions on behalf of Canadians will continue to stand as a testament to her legacy.

May she rest in power.
